About Me*

Hi, I'm Oaklyn (note, this is a made-up name. I run Break The System anonymously and would like to keep it that way)! I use she/they pronouns. I'm a LGBTQ+ Asian-American high school senior (12th grade) enrolled in a public high school.

I was inspired to start Break The System after loosing many fights against my school to pursue opportunities that would have allowed me to thrive in high school. These events revealed major faults in the US public education system that were invisible to (or ignored by) most adults. I tried to find people who were determined to bring the failure of US public schools to light, but found that there were few actually stepping up. I realized, then, that I wanted to find a way to amplify the voices of thousands of teens who were struggling with their schools, just like I was.

I started Break The System on February 25th 2022 as a way to let the world know that students' voices cannot just be ignored and the US public education crisis needs immediate attention. My goal is to unite students together in favor for change.

Speaking out against the failures of US public education is scary. The consequences of silence are even scarier.

When I'm not studying for school or working on Break The System Campaign, I enjoy writing poetry and novels, reading, and traveling. I am passionate about the intersection of human rights and social reform and how we can use politics and social media as platforms to create meaningful, long-lasting change.

I hope you'll stay with me and help me on my journey to make sure every student gets the education they deserve and the resources they need to survive.

Special note: yes, this website and Break The System's Instagram account (@BreakTheSystem.Campaign) are run by just me! I'm currently not looking for additional people to run Break The System with, though I'm often involved in collaborations and communicate frequently with everyone who reaches out!
