Access to abortion is a human right. Overturning Roe v. Wade is an attack on human rights.

This post is a resource hub, which will be updated to contain resources and links to learn more about abortion and Roe v. Wade.

Roe V. Wade: Historical Context:

(psst, here's the APUSH review, in case you need it). Roe v. Wade was a Supreme Court case that took place during the 1970s counterculture movement. During this time, many groups emerged that challenged societal norms. One of them was the womens' movement, which gained popularity. Reproductive rights were central to the womens' movement platform/cause.

In 1971, Roe wanted an abortion, however, Texas' laws prohibited her from getting one because her pregnancy did not threaten her life.

On January 22, 1973, the Supreme Court ruled in a 7-2 decision that: states could not pass legislation banning abortion until the end of the first trimester.

This decision was based on a previous case, Griswold v. Connecticut, which ruled that prohibiting access to contraceptives was an invasion of privacy, and was therefore, unconstitutional. This decision is also backed by the Fourteenth Amendment to the Constitution, which does more than just ban slavery. It also discusses the importance of racial and gender equality.

Roe v. Wade: Today

Today, Roe v. Wade protects the reproductive rights of millions of people currently in need of (or will eventually need) an abortion.

In fact, 13 states have "trigger laws" that will pass complete bans on abortions if Roe v. Wade is overturned. These states are mostly southern, conservative states in which many people live below the poverty line (especially BIPOC, LGBTQ+ members). This would leave many people with no other choice but to go out of state for an abortion, which is financially devastating, or even impossible. Once again, BIPOC (especially Black, Indigenous, Hispanics, and Latino/Latina people) will be disproportionately effected.

This would cause thousands to loose body autonomy.

People choose to get abortions for many reasons, none of which is anyone's business. That being said, many states with abortion-restricting laws make no exception for cases of r*pe or those that could be medically harmful to people who can get pregnant.

In fact, in some states, it is possible for a*users' families to sue victims for getting an abortion, which is absolutely disgusting.

"Pro-lifers" are hypocrites.

Most men will never know the full impact of carrying a child on a person's life. People who cannot get pregnant should not be a part of making a decision that can impact people who can get pregnant.

"Pro-lifers" are mostly conservatives who would rather force a person to raise a child when they are not ready, potentially bringing a child into the world without someone to properly take care of them.

Banning abortions doesn't stop abortions. It only stops safe ones. For you "pro-lifers," let me translate this for you: this means both the pregnant person and child can be harmed through unsafe abortions. THIS IS NOT PRO-LIFE IN ANY WAY, SHAPE, OR FORM.

This is an attack on human rights, and I will not stand for it.

Access to abortion is healthcare, it is a right and overturning Roe v. Wade is an attack on human rights across America. #MyBodyMyChoice Resources:
